What is an AZ License Training Course? (AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT))

Becoming licensed as an AZ Driver qualifies a driver to operate any tractor-trailer combination with a high degree of confidence and safety. At the Olympic Truck Training Centre Inc., we ensure every one of our students is fully trained on everything they need to know to properly operate a truck in any weather condition. Our facility is an approved training provider for the Class A License new  Mandatory Entry Level AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT) program. Once you've completed our program you are immediately eligible to take your road test.

Who is required to take AZ training? (AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT))

This entry-level training is mandatory prior to attempting to the road test if:

  • You are taking your Class A road test
  • Have a restricted Class A (AR) licence and want to upgrade to a full Class A
  • Had a full Class A licence, but it is invalid (e.g. expired, downgraded, suspended) for three or more years
  • Have a commercial driver’s licence from another country
  • Have had a Class 1 commercial licence (Class A equivalent) from a Canadian province other than Ontario for less than 12 months
    • If you had it for 12-24 months, you will have the option to complete mandatory entry-level training or the Class A knowledge and road test

*You do not have to take the training if you already hold a valid full Class A licence.

Admission requirements prior to registering for the AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT) Program

  • OSSD/equivalent or Mature student (at least 18 years of age) who has successfully completed an approved qualifying test  
  • Class G license
  • MTO Medical Form
  • Test for rules of the road and signs

What is covered in our AZ License Training Course? (AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT))

At the Olympic Truck Training Centre Inc., we make sure we cover every piece of training you need to successfully pass your road test and know all the skills required to drive a truck.

Structured time to cover all topics 

In keeping with industry requirements, our trainers dedicate a minimum of 116 hours to instructing their students. This is broken down in to:

  • 37 of classroom hours
  • 17 in the yard (pre-trip inspection) hours
  • 32 in the truck on road hours
  • 18 in the truck off road hours
  • 12 hours for Airbrake endorsement (credit will be given to students who already have a Z endorsement)

Detailed course layout 

Under this training, you get to learn how to safely:

  • Make right turns in all types of situations
  • Emergency roadside stops/starts
  • Complete offset backing (left or right) or an alley dock 90-degree backing to demonstrate their backing skills
  • All other skills required to successfully pass your road test

Learn proper truck maintenance

Knowing how to maintain your truck is as important as knowing how to drive it. Our training course includes structured time to teach our students:

  • Proper vehicle inspection
  • Truck maintenance
  • Correct diagnosis of issues
  • Proper reporting of malfunctions

Feel confident taking the road test

Once you've gone through our driver training program to absolutely ensure you're ready for the road test we go through simulated test environments with our students to not only test their knowledge of the AZ license requirements but also help them be more comfortable in a test environment.

What will you graduate with after completing the AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT) program?

On successfully completing the AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT) program you will receive:

  • An AZ Tractor-Trailer (MELT) Certificate from Olympic Truck Training Centre Inc.
  • A certificate from the OTTC that you can use to prove to any major insurance company that you are an insurable driver
  • The training and skills required to successfully pass your road test

You can register online, by calling in, or visiting our office to set up an appointment to enroll. Once your enrolment is confirmed, you will receive all course information required to successfully take the course.
